5:00 a.m. in the east. the supreme court saying the federal government must recognize same-sex marriages and opening the door for gay unions to resume in virginia. they took to the streets celebrating what is called a major victory for gay rights. >> reporter: all night and into this morning, celebrations for historic ruling. while others denounce what they call the death of traditional values. emotional reactions following a pair of supreme court decisions giving the same-sex marriage movement the biggest victories to date. the court striking down part of the defense of marriage act to deny benefits to same-sex couples and allowing them to resume in california whachlt now? >> we will continue to fight in the states where we won 37 times. i think the states will continue to fend for traditional marriage

in overwhelming numbers. >> reporter: one of the lawyers who led the case at the supreme court says bring it on. >> in five years, our goal is to have marriage equality throughout the country. i think it's achievable. >> reporter: support for same-sex marriage has grown over the years. 55% supported it. two years ago, 51%. four years ago, it was far less. there's still a long way to go. as of now, 12 states in the district of columbia voted to allow same-sex marriage. 36 states forbid it. california voted for it and against it. now the supreme court declined to rule on proposition 8. >> there's no doubt, what so ever, the bells will ring and the marriages will begin. >> reporter: both sides have plenty of money and are highly motivated and have been doing this for years. you haven't heard the last of

the fight over same-sex marriage. joe johns, cnn, washington. >> president obama applauding the ruling from afar calling it a victory for couples who long fought for equal treatment under the law. the president is on his first leg of his trip to after rhaka. so is brianna. what's on the schedule for today? >> reporter: well today, john, president obama shortly here will be meeting with the president of senegal, then he'll hold a press conference with him. later in the day, this morning, he'll go to the island, a departure point for slaves heading out of africa, including to the u.s. president obama will be drawing that connection between this place here and between african-americans who can trace their roots. we are expecting it to be a very emotional and meaningful visit

that he pays later today. he's here because this is an example of a democratic african nation. the president he's meeting with and will hold the press conference with is one who will replace an incumbent trying to change the constitution to serve a third term and facing a lot of pressure, grass roots pressure, as well as political and international pressure including from the u.s. the president who is now in place was able to triumph. this is something president obama will be highlighting, john. >> the president in senegal with you later in the trip, he plans to visit south africa. there was a notion he will meet with nelson mandela. i have to imagine that will change. he is on life support. how does nelson mandela's deteriorating health affect this trip? >> reporter: this is something i will tell you the white house is

monitoring closely. obviously, this was the highlight of the trip would have been a visit with nelson mandela. president obama is scheduled to go to the island where mandela and other political prisoners were in prison. that was a highlight of the trip. the white house is not speculating on how the trip is changing. you know they are certainly considering, as they monitor the situation, how it could affect the trip. at this point, the itinerary has not changed. what we can expect is as president obama goes to south africa, you can see the tone of what he's talking about change. some of the events may be step down. certainly just because nelson mandela's health is in such a critical state at this point. the itinerary they scheduled for south africa wasn't over the top. this visit to robin island, he was supposed to have a visit

with nelson mandela. right now, things may be tremendously affected and step down the tone. >> we know you will keep us posted on that. brianna traveling with the president. thank you. edward snowden is still held up in an airport today. it's unclear when or if he's leaving. he asked ecuador for asylum. they are not in a rush to approve his application. chuck hagel is insisting the leaks seriously damaged national security. he says snowden broke the law. he wants russia to return the nsa contractor to this country for prosecution. in the wake of the leaks, intelligence officials say terror groups are adapting the way they communicate, posting online instructions in one case, changing phone numbers or using software to hide information. the spy agency is said to be

scrambling to keep up with the terror groups to stop plots. >> the cia is stopping public leaks to keep officers from giving information. a memo by the associated press is to design a culture of secret si within the cia. there have been leaks from the agency within years. a final vote on immigration reform. a vote is set for today and lawmakers may give a last okay to the bill by friday. it would provide a path to citizenship for 11 million immigrants now in the country illegally boosting border security. it faces an uncertain future in the house of representatives. john boehner said he will not allow a vote unless a majority of republicans support it. acting irs director goes back before congress and will go back to talk about special scrutiny where he's expected to

talk about what he's learned in the internal investigation. a senior irs manager wednesday took the fifth, refused to testify. gregory worked in a procurement office and was friends with a man who runs the company that won the contract. sax major drug bust. dozens of arrests worldwide. traffickers pushing designer drugs seizing more than 2,000 pounds of synthetic marijuana plus other substances that mimic lsd and cocaine. law enforcement says money from the sale of the drugs flowed out of the u.s. to panama and the middle east as well. after the storm comes the clean up. heavy rain and high winds did damage in parts of ohio. trees and power lines no match for the storm. a tree came crashing down on a man's home, puncturing a hole in

his ceiling. >> the winds were so high and debris in the air. i couldn't see the tree fell in front of me as i was watching. i heard a boom and glass. >> i can't believe that happened in an hour. the winds had to be ridiculous. >> that's right. thankfully no storm related injuries have been reported. >> it is hot and getting hotter out west. we are talking wicked hot. the national weather service predicting a heat wave at least until the next week. it's a long time. temperatures could reach 120 degrees in desert areas of arizona and california. heat and draught-like conditions contributed to wildfires. >> one of our loyal viewers said walking outside phoenix was like a blow-dryer, walking out with a hair drier blowing on you. horrible. >> it's scary to think. we haven't reached the high temperatures. yeah, we are warming, but friday, saturday, sunday,

temperatures close to 120. some places as hot as 130. yeah, that is way too hot. we are going to show you that. ohio, this morning, you are waking up with heavy thunderstorms in the area. that same area that same storm that is pushing to the east. we are talking about heavy rain. we are dealing with the moist, gulf air this time of year. we get the winds from the south and the humid air. the cold front that produced the storms in ohio is pushing east. we'll talk about heavy rain as we go to the weekend. with that, we're talking about areas of slight risk and the threats of heavier thunderstorms. what everyone is talking about what a gorgeous weekend it was last weekend and this weekend, not so much. three to five inches of rain pushing through the mid-atlantic. it's not just us in the northeast down to the southeast. we are going to talk about rain. they are going to get the typical afternoon thunderstorms. of course, we were talking about the storms. we are talking as high as 120 and 130.

in florida, it was an explosive day. the so-called star witness in the trial of george zimmerman was on the other end of the phone with trayvon martin before his death. when court convenes, she could face tough new questions. george howell reports from sanford, florida. >> reporter: she's the last to have spoken to trayvon martin on his cell phone the night he was fatally shot and killed, a key witness to the prosecution whose testimony took various turns throughout the day. at first, rachel became emotional when questioned about why she lied saying she was in the hospital and couldn't go to her friend's funeral. >> i didn't want to see the body. >> you didn't want to see the body? >> no. >> reporter: she shade martin used racial slurs like the "n"

word. >> you said the man looked creepy. >> creepy white. >> reporter: she told martin to run, but the phone went dead. when she called him back, martin told her he was still being watched, then confronted. he said why are you following me for? i heard a hard breathed man say what are you doing around here. i was calling, trayvon, trayvon. i heard him saying get off, get off. >> reporter: then the tone of her testimony changed when cross examined by zimmerman's team. >> i had told you, you listening? >> reporter: the 19-year-old admitted she lied about her age, claiming to be 16 at the time of the shooting because she didn't want to be questioned. she didn't call police to tell her account because she expected police to contact her like they

do on tv shows. then there's the issue of the audio recording. the witness made with attorney ben crump. a recording crump played publicly. she admitted she made the recording hastily and didn't really want to do it. >> crump doesn't mean nothing to me. >> you didn't take it seriously? >> nope. >> reporter: george howell, cnn, sanford, florida. >> the now former patriots tight end, aaron hernandez is held in massachusetts without bail. he's charged for the shooting of oden lloyd. prosecutors alleged he orchestrated the crime. a defense attorney claims the

evidence is circumstantial. the team signed the tight end to a $40 million contract last summer. tragedy in arizona. two fighter pilots safely ejecting before their jet crashed last night. it went down in a desert area in the phoenix suburbs. no word on what caused the f-16 to crash. protesters back on the streets in egypt angry at their president. hundreds gathered as morsi promised more changes and pledged to correct past mistakes. two people killed, hundreds injured. more demonstrations planned for sunday. >> demonstrations continue in brazil where 40,000 people took to the streets. they are upset over corruption and the millions spent ahead of the world cup for the olympics. they hosted a huge soccer match between the national team.

good morning, welcome back to "early start." a hawaiian vacation turning disastrous for hikers. firefighters had to rescue them while they were trapped. one of the hikers, a 7-year-old girl had to be air lifted to a hospital. thankfully, none of the injuries are life threatening. in illinois, a water rescue. a van driven into high water. the driver trapped inside. emergency personnel needed a life raft to get to him. they road him to safety. imagine that. floodwaters washed away much of the road. we have all made typos, it es inevitable. one college should have looked
